As a photographer, I feel like I have found my style and my niche. It’s something that I’ve strived for and take pride in achieving. But no matter how “established” and prepared I feel, there are sessions that sneak up and surprise you in fantastic new ways. This was one of them. When I booked this family for photos in Helena, MT’s beautiful walking mall, I knew it would be a meaningful shoot. After all, I’ve known Lorna since moving to Helena and would consider her one of my first friends in Montana. However, I didn’t expect just how deeply it would move me behind the lens.
A New Chapter: Toddlers in the Frame
This session marked a first for my portfolio — a toddler as the star of the show. Little ones bring an unpredictability that you simply can’t script or pose or plan. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was the sheer emotion and magic it could bring out in every photo. Every candid glance, every wobbly step down the brick-lined path, every burst of laughter (and pouts) became its own perfect frame. Helena’s walking mall, with its historic architecture and old trolley car, gave us a stunning backdrop that felt both timeless and alive.
